Today is my birthday. The passage of time is a curious thing. It feels as if I continually grow closer to new beginnings where life swims in my body with greater ease. This has less to do with the number of years as with the poetry of living moments that shape days.

Life is stirring and expanding for each of us in some way. This may occur unexpectedly as our skills emerge creatively. For example, yoga and qigong have been part of my life for 30+ years. Both practices live in my bones. I lead qigong classes that begin with yoga warm-ups. The Gentle Flow Yoga that I instruct is laced with qigong transitions. Rather than being a conscious effort to integrate two different things, a fluid moving confluence of both practices simply occurs.

From our first cry at birth our voice and expression in the world grows. It is said that in our early years, we aim to achieve. In our middle years, we gain perspective. In our later years, wisdom grows. This general trajectory speaks to our psychology.

Spiritual maturing reveals a non-linear life that arises in stillness. Its yield ripens in the tide of a moment as time turns timeless and there is room for everything to breathe together. Grace arrives, a curtain lifts, a crack of light
widens and we bathe in stillness, discovering deepest peace, clarity and wisdom that has always been here.

Life is full and mysterious. We are unique and mysterious. A point in time comes when we realize we are comfortable being a mystery, comfortable living at an edgeless edge where life is unknown, where polarities are not separate things, simply reflections and facets of one thing. Beyond our psychology, this occurs at any stage of life.

Breath comes and goes as it does. Hands on the clock move ’round. Weather’s cyclical currents arise. Each conscious breath unifies us in awareness that truly animates our life, all life. In this aware, enlivening simplicity, creativity slices through a moment into expression, spilling our wild silkiness into life. Giving wings to a single kernel of life, courageously and beautifully releasing it to fly, something new and unique is born in the whole of creation.

All the while, as moons and tides expand and contract we are invited to hold our being kindly, compassionately. In this, we live more consistently in a timeless field of heartspace and a flowing convergence of ever-new beginnings.
